Narrow Route 66; 1980![]() A story I read somewhere about this oddly narrow stretch of Route 66 near Miami, Oklahoma indicated that the U.S. government would contribute half of the paving costs (and the road had to be paved to qualify as Route 66) for the new highway, and since money was short, they used the government's half to pave the road with asphalt, and used their "half" to dump stones to make the road wide enough for travel.
